Situated
8 km. west of Saint-Gengoux-le-National, Saint-Clément-sur-Guye
is a small village of 135 inhabitants. At the south-west utmost ends of the Côte chalonnaise, the village is located on
a promontory at an altitude
of about 400 m. It overlooks the valley of the Guye, a river to
the West at an altitude of approximately 225 m. Saint-Clément-sur-Guye
possesses many sorts of important relics: two Neolithic menhirs,
a Roman road, a Merovingian cemetery, etc. The buildings are organized
along concentric alleyways around a central block consisting of
a church listed as a national monument and a group of farm buildings
and accompanying houses. The architectural unity of the old houses
of the village gives it a particular character. The local economy
is essentially agricultural. There is an artisan of art too (ceramic), an
equestrian farm with ponies... The municipality, which has many tourist
attractions (hiking and cross-country biking trails, hang-gliding
take-off point and a viewpoint over the Guye valley), has installed
an inn, a free wine-tasting cellar, a "Gîte de séjour" and the new mayor's office in the former farm buildings near the church.
These developments, meant to invigorate the area and attract tourists
are investments in the revitalization of this picturesque village. |

In
continuity with these various activities, The Society
for the Preservation and Enhancement of Saint-Clément-sur-Guye,
as the proprietor of an old windmill - now in ruins - hopes to restore
it. This is a legally registered non-profit organization. Among
its various objectives, we may note that it supports all activities,
which might protect, preserve or highlight those monuments having
archeological, historic or architectural value. The association
is already involved in several different restoration activities,
notably concerning cadoles (old drystone winegrower’s huts) and
a house in the village center. It also carries out occasional actions
such as the organization of exhibitions, conferences or concerts
in the Romanesque church. This document has been created to interest
possible sponsors in helping to finance the restoration of the Billebaud
windmill. Additional funds are indispensable to complete the work.
